In-Flight Skin Survival Guide: How to Protect Your Skin While Flying

July 14, 2025 by lewis

Jetting off on holiday? While you’re dreaming of sandy beaches and poolside cocktails, don’t forget to give your skin some first-class care—especially while flying.

Air travel can wreak havoc on your skin due to dry cabin air, disrupted sleep, UV exposure, and changes in air pressure. Here’s how to step off the plane glowing, not grey.

1. Hydrate Inside & Out

Aircraft cabin humidity can drop to below 20%—that’s drier than most deserts! This zaps moisture from your skin, leaving it tight, flaky, and dull.

  • Drink plenty of water before and during your flight (aim for at least 1 glass per hour).
  • Skip caffeine and alcohol—they dehydrate you further.
  • Use a hydrating serum or facial mist to lock in moisture. Look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides.

2. Don’t Forget the SPF – Yes, Even On a Plane

Flying at 35,000 feet means you’re closer to the sun and exposed to more UV radiation—especially if you’re sitting by a window. UVA rays penetrate glass and contribute to skin ageing and skin cancer.

  • Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ before boarding
  •  Reapply if you’re on a long-haul flight and seated by a window
  •  Consider closing the blind to reduce exposure

3. Simplify Your In-Flight Skincare

Now’s not the time for your full 10-step routine. Stick to hydration and protection.

Pre-Flight:

  • Cleanse your skin
  • Apply serum and a rich moisturiser
  • Finish with SPF

In-Flight:

  • Use a hydrating mist every few hours
  • Dab on eye cream or balm if your under-eyes feel tight
  • Apply lip balm to prevent cracking

Post-Flight:

  • Cleanse again to remove built-up grime
  • Apply a calming serum or moisturiser to rebalance the skin

4. Skip the Make-up

Heavy makeup can dry out the skin further and clog pores, especially in a dry cabin environment.

If you prefer some coverage, opt for a tinted moisturiser with SPF or a BB cream that lets your skin breathe while providing light hydration and protection.

5. Treat Yourself to a Post-Flight Skin Boost

After a long journey, treat your skin to some TLC. A hydrating mask, gentle exfoliation, or a visit to Southface Skin Clinic for a post-travel facial or skincare review can help restore your glow.

Travelling Soon?

If you have skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, or acne, speak to one of our Consultant Dermatologists before you fly. We can recommend personalised travel skincare and treatments to keep your skin healthy wherever you go.

Wherever your travels take you, don’t let your skin be left behind.

Staying Safe in the Heatwave: Expert Skin Advice from Southface Skin Clinic

July 9, 2025 by lewis

With temperatures soaring across the UK, we’re all keen to make the most of the sunshine. But as Consultant Dermatologists at Southface Skin Clinic, we’re here to remind you: while sunshine can lift our mood, it can also harm your skin if you’re not careful.

Here’s how to stay safe, cool, and skin-smart during this heatwave.

1. SPF is Non-Negotiable

If there’s one product you must use daily, it’s sunscreen. Even on cloudy days, UV rays can cause damage.

  • Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher
  • Reapply every 2 hours, and more if swimming or sweating
  • Don’t forget high-risk areas like ears, lips, hands, and feet

Top Tip: Look for formulas that are non-comedogenic (won’t block pores) and suitable for sensitive skin.

2. Hydration Is Essential

Hot weather increases your risk of dehydration, which affects your entire body – including your skin.

  • Drink at least 2 litres of water daily
  • Avoid too much caffeine or alcohol
  • Use a hydrating serum or mist for an added skin boost

3. Seek Shade & Time It Right

Try to avoid direct sun between 11am and 3pm, when UV rays are strongest.

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and breathable clothing
  • Stay under cover or use a UV umbrella when out and about
  • Babies and young children are especially vulnerable – keep them protected

4. Heat Rash & Sensitivities

Heat and humidity can irritate the skin, leading to rashes, breakouts or flare-ups of conditions like rosacea or eczema.

  • Shower off sweat with lukewarm water
  • Wear loose, cotton clothing
  • Avoid heavy skincare or make-up that can trap heat and block pores

If your skin flares up, speak to one of our Consultant Dermatologists – we can help.

5. Know the Warning Signs of Sunburn

If your skin feels hot, tight, red or blistered – you’re already burnt. Sunburn can increase your risk of skin cancer, including melanoma.

  • Apply cool compresses or aloe vera
  • Avoid further sun exposure while healing
  • If blistering or severe discomfort occurs, seek medical advice

Southface Skin Clinic: Your Skin, Our Priority

We’re not just here for treatments – we’re here to support year-round skin health. If you have any concerns about sun damage, pigmentation, moles, or your skincare routine in the heat, our team is ready to help.

Stay safe, stay cool, and take care of your skin – it’s the only one you’ve got.

Say Goodbye to Stubborn Warts: Introducing DCP Immunotherapy at Southface Skin Clinic

July 1, 2025 by lewis

Warts can be frustrating, persistent, and often resistant to over-the-counter treatments. If you’ve tried everything from freezing to burning — with little or no success — you’re not alone.

At Southface Skin Clinic, we’re proud to offer an advanced, science-backed solution that’s helping patients finally clear their stubborn warts for good: DCP Immunotherapy.

What Is DCP Wart Treatment?

DCP (short for diphenylcyclopropenone) is an immunotherapy treatment that works by stimulating your immune system to recognise and destroy the virus responsible for warts — the human papillomavirus (HPV).

Rather than damaging the wart directly (as with freezing or acid treatments), DCP triggers a mild, controlled immune response that allows your body to naturally fight off the virus and eliminate the wart over time.

How Does It Work?

Treatment is simple and non-invasive:

  1. We apply a topical solution of DCP directly to the wart.
  2. No pain, no freezing, and no anaesthetic is required.
  3. Over the course of several sessions, your body’s immune system begins to target the virus.
  4. Warts typically resolve within 2 to 6 treatments, depending on the individual and wart type.

Why Choose DCP?

It’s effective:
Clinical studies and patient results show excellent clearance rates, especially in younger patients. In fact, we’ve seen up to a 100% success rate in those under 30 at Southface.

It’s painless:
Unlike cryotherapy or laser treatments, DCP involves no discomfort during or after application.

It’s safe and well-tolerated:
Side effects are minimal and typically limited to mild redness or itching at the application site.

It treats the root cause:
By activating your immune system, DCP treats the underlying virus, not just the surface lesion — reducing the chance of recurrence.

Is DCP Right for You?

DCP is ideal for patients who:

  • Have persistent or treatment-resistant warts
  • Prefer a painless, non-invasive solution
  • Want to avoid freezing, burning, or surgical options
  • Are looking for long-term clearance

It is especially effective for children, teens, and young adults, but can be considered in older patients too.

Why Southface Skin Clinic?

As one of the only clinics in the UK offering DCP immunotherapy, Southface Skin Clinic is uniquely positioned to deliver this highly specialised treatment. Our expert dermatology team is experienced in managing difficult-to-treat skin conditions and will work with you to create a personalised treatment plan.

Book Your Consultation Today

If you’re tired of battling stubborn warts, DCP immunotherapy could be the breakthrough you’ve been waiting for. Book a consultation with our team to discuss your options and start your journey toward clearer, healthier skin.

June is Acne Awareness Month: Let’s Talk About Clearer Skin

June 23, 2025 by lewis

Acne affects up to 95% of people aged 11 to 30 at some point — yet it’s still one of the most misunderstood and under-treated skin conditions. At Southface Skin Clinic, we’re marking Acne Awareness Month by shedding light on the real impact of acne and the wide range of effective, expert-led treatments available to help you take control of your skin.

Understanding Acne

Acne is a common inflammatory skin condition that can present as:

  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Red spots or pustules
  • Painful nodules or cysts
  • Post-acne pigmentation or scarring

It often appears on the face, chest, and back — and while it’s commonly associated with teenagers, acne can affect adults of all ages, including those in their 30s, 40s and beyond.

Left untreated, acne can have a significant impact on self-esteem, confidence, and overall quality of life.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): A Targeted, Non-Surgical Treatment for Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma

June 16, 2025 by lewis

At Southface Skin Clinic, we offer advanced and evidence-based treatments for a range of skin conditions, including superficial basal cell carcinoma (sBCC) — one of the most common forms of non-melanoma skin cancer.

One of the highly effective, non-invasive treatments available at our clinic is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) — a precise, light-based therapy that targets cancerous skin cells while preserving surrounding healthy tissue.

What is Photodynamic Therapy?

Photodynamic Therapy is a specialised treatment that combines a light-sensitive medication with a specific wavelength of light to selectively destroy abnormal skin cells.

It’s particularly well-suited to treating superficial basal cell carcinomas, which are often found on the face, scalp, chest, or back. PDT is non-surgical, highly targeted, and delivers excellent cosmetic results — making it an ideal choice for patients seeking effective treatment with minimal downtime or scarring.

How Does PDT Work?

  1. Preparation – The affected area is gently prepared, and a photosensitising cream is applied to the lesion.
  2. Incubation – The cream is left on the skin for a few hours to allow it to be absorbed by the abnormal cells.
  3. Activation – A special red or blue light is then applied to the area, activating the cream and destroying the targeted cancer cells.
  4. Healing – Over the next few days to weeks, the treated area will heal, often leaving minimal marks compared to traditional surgical methods.

Why Choose PDT for Superficial BCC?

  • Minimally invasive
  • No surgical incision or stitches
  • Excellent cosmetic outcome
  • Outpatient procedure
  • Well-tolerated with minimal downtime

PDT is particularly beneficial for lesions in cosmetically sensitive areas, such as the face or scalp, or for patients who may not be ideal candidates for surgery.

Consultant-Led Skin Cancer Care

At Southface Skin Clinic, our skin cancer services are led by highly experienced consultant dermatologists. If you’ve been diagnosed with a superficial BCC, we’ll carefully assess your case and discuss the most appropriate treatment options, including whether PDT may be right for you.

If you’ve been referred for treatment or are concerned about a suspicious skin lesion, we’re here to help.
