What is Menopause
The menopause is the phase of a woman's life when her reproductive cycle comes to an end. Her ovaries stop producing oestrogen and she doesn't release an egg each month, meaning she no longer has periods.
The menopause doesn't happen overnight. For most women, oestrogen decreases gradually over several years which means they could experience symptoms while their periods are still regular. This phase is called the peri-menopause.
The menopause normally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. About 4% of women become menopausal when they are 40 years old or younger. This is known as a premature menopause, or premature ovarian insufficiency.
What happens to my body in Menopause?
The decrease in oestrogen can give rise to a wide range of symptoms which vary hugely in duration, severity, and the impact they have on women's lives.
Hot flushes are the most common symptom, occurring in three in every four menopausal women.
Other common symptoms include night sweats, sleeplessness, low energy, impaired memory, 'brain fog', headaches, vaginal dryness, irritated skin, urinary incontinence, urinary tract infections, low mood, and a reduced interest in sex.
Low oestrogen levels can silently affect the strength and density of women's bones, increasing the risk of osteoporosis.
There are no obvious symptoms of this condition-the first sign is usually a fracture.
Bone health is of paramount importance to us. We may prescribe HRT to help protect your bones, even when you aren't experiencing more noticeable symptoms. If we detect any signs of bone thinning, we can tailor your treatment accordingly.
Dr Aulds is committed to providing a holistic approach to your bone health, considering factors such as nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle to ensure comprehensive care.
