Photodynamic Therapy at Southface Skin Clinic

November 27, 2023 by Helen Robertshaw

In the realm of cancer treatment, scientific advancements continually seek less invasive and more targeted approaches. One such promising innovation that is now available at Southface Skin Clinic is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), a method gaining recognition for its efficacy in treating various skin cancers.

Photodynamic Therapy is a medical treatment that utilises light-sensitive compounds, known as photosensitizers, in combination with light to selectively destroy abnormal cells. The photosensitizer is administered either topically or through injection, depending on the specific case and cancer type. Once absorbed by the targeted cells, the photosensitizer is activated by light of a specific wavelength, leading to a series of reactions that culminate in cell death.

The Process

1. Photosensitizer Administration: The patient receives a photosensitizing agent, which may be applied directly to the skin or administered systemically, depending on the extent and type of cancer.

2. Absorption: The photosensitizer is absorbed by both normal and cancerous cells but tends to accumulate more in the cancerous cells due to their increased vascularity and permeability.

3. Activation: After a specific incubation period, light is applied to the treatment area, activating the photosensitizer. This process generates reactive oxygen species, leading to cell damage and death.

4. Selective Destruction: The activated photosensitizer preferentially targets cancer cells, sparing surrounding healthy tissues to a significant extent.

The Results

Photodynamic Therapy has shown promising results in the treatment of various skin cancers, including:

1. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common form of skin cancer, BCC responds well to PDT, particularly in cases where surgery is not a preferred option.

2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): PDT is effective in treating superficial SCCs, offering a non-invasive alternative to surgery for certain patients.

3. Actinic Keratosis (AK): PDT is used to treat precancerous skin lesions, preventing their progression to more advanced forms of skin cancer.

Benefits of Photodynamic Therapy:

1. Minimally Invasive: PDT is a minimally invasive procedure, reducing the need for extensive surgery and associated recovery times.

2. Cosmetic Outcome: Compared to surgery, PDT often results in better cosmetic outcomes, with reduced scarring and disfigurement.

3. Targeted Treatment: The ability to selectively target cancer cells minimizes damage to healthy tissues, leading to fewer side effects.

4. Outpatient Procedure: In many cases, PDT is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to resume normal activities shortly after treatment.

Photodynamic Therapy represents a promising frontier in skin cancer treatment, offering a less invasive and targeted alternative to traditional methods. As research continues to refine and expand the applications of PDT, it holds the potential to become a cornerstone in the fight against skin cancer. While it may not be suitable for all cases, its integration into the broader spectrum of cancer therapies underscores the ongoing commitment to advancing patient care and outcomes.

Freezing Away Imperfections: Using Cryotherapy to Remove Skin Tags

November 20, 2023 by Helen Robertshaw

Skin tags are common skin growths that can be a nuisance, especially when they appear in highly visible areas or become irritated. If you’ve been dealing with skin tags and are looking for a non-invasive and effective method to remove them, cryotherapy may be the solution you’ve been seeking. In this blog, we’ll explore how cryotherapy can be used to eliminate those bothersome skin tags.

What Are Skin Tags?

Skin tags, scientifically known as acrochordons, are small, soft, benign growths that usually appear on the neck, armpits, groin, or areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing. They are typically flesh-colored and may vary in size and shape.

Cryotherapy is a medical procedure that uses extreme cold to remove or destroy abnormal or unwanted tissue, including skin tags. In this context, it’s often referred to as cryosurgery. Here’s how it works…

How it works

1. Freezing Agent: Cryotherapy for skin tag removal involves using a freezing agent, most commonly liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen is extremely cold and, when applied to the skin tag, causes the cells to freeze and ultimately die.

2. Application: Our dermatologists, will use a specialized device to apply the liquid nitrogen directly to the skin tag. The cold temperature quickly freezes the tissue, which may result in a stinging or burning sensation during the procedure.

3. Cell Destruction: The freezing causes the cells within the skin tag to break down and die. Over time, the dead tissue will naturally slough off.

4. Healing Process: As the treated area heals, the skin tag will shrink and eventually fall off. The process typically takes a few weeks.

Advantages of Cryotherapy for Skin Tag Removal

Using cryotherapy to remove skin tags offers several advantages:

1. Non-Invasive: Cryotherapy is a non-invasive procedure, meaning it doesn’t require incisions or stitches, making it less painful and risky compared to other methods.

2. Quick Procedure: The actual cryotherapy treatment for skin tags is usually swift and can be performed during a single office visit.

3. Minimal Scarring: Cryotherapy typically results in minimal scarring, especially when compared to surgical removal methods.

4. Effective: Cryotherapy is an effective method for removing skin tags, and it is generally safe when performed by a trained healthcare provider.

Cautions and Considerations

While cryotherapy is a relatively safe and effective procedure for skin tag removal, there are a few cautions and considerations to keep in mind:

1. Pain and Discomfort: The freezing process can be uncomfortable, with some experiencing stinging or burning sensations during the procedure.

2. Scarring: Although minimal, there may still be some scarring or discoloration at the treatment site.

3. Who performs the treatment: It is extremely important you have a medical professional such as a dermatologist carry out this treatment due to the worry of the skin tag being cancerous. A lot of beauticians can now perform cryotherapy and we have had a few patients come to us where the skin tag has been removed but it was actually cancerous! Our dermatologists will check the skin tag is not cancerous before removal.

Cryotherapy is a cool and convenient method for removing skin tags, offering an effective way to get rid of these common skin growths without the need for invasive surgery. If you have skin tags that are bothering you, consulting a dermatologist or healthcare professional about cryotherapy could be the step toward smoother, tag-free skin that you’ve been looking for. Just remember to discuss your options and potential risks with a medical expert before proceeding with the treatment.

Embracing Autumn: Essential Skincare Tips for the Fall Season

October 12, 2023 by Helen Robertshaw

As the leaves change colors and the air turns crisper, it’s a signal that autumn has arrived. With this seasonal transition, our skincare routines also need to adapt to the changing weather conditions. The combination of cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and increased exposure to indoor heating can take a toll on our skin. But fear not, because in this blog, we’ll share some essential autumn skincare tips to keep your skin healthy, glowing, and well-nourished throughout the fall season.

1. Hydration is Key

As the humidity levels drop, it’s crucial to amp up your hydration game. Start from within by drinking plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out. Additionally, switch to a richer moisturiser to seal in moisture and prevent dryness. Look for products that contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides.

2. Gentle Cleansing

Autumn is the perfect time to transition to a milder, sulfate-free cleanser. Harsh cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, which are essential for maintaining a healthy skin barrier. Opt for a gentle, hydrating cleanser that will cleanse your skin without over-drying it. Here at Southface our go to cleanser is the Alumier Hydraboost Cleanser. The Hydraboost Cleanser is a smooth, hydrating pH-balanced creamy cleanser that delicately removes impurities, excess oil and makeup.
The natural cleanser yucca seed extract gently cleans skin. Vitamin E, sunflower seed oil and argan oil moisturize, leaving skin smooth, soft and intensely hydrated. Buy yours here.

3. Exfoliate Wisely

Exfoliation is essential year-round, but you may need to adjust your exfoliation routine for the fall season. Cooler weather can lead to dry, flaky skin, so consider using a gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and promote a smoother complexion. However, don’t overdo it; once or twice a week should be sufficient.

4. Sunscreen is Still a Must

Don’t be fooled by the shorter days and overcast skies. UV rays can still harm your skin during autumn, so continue applying sunscreen daily. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from the sun’s damaging effects. Our top recommendation is the Alumier Sheer Hydration SPF. This sunscreen is packed with free-radical-quenching antioxidants, including a stable vitamin C, resveratrol, grape seed extract, and glutathione. The versatile tint blends beautifully on the skin creating a sheer healthy glow. Buy your here.

5. Lip Care

Your lips can become chapped and dry as the weather cools down. Keep a nourishing lip balm handy to prevent your lips from becoming cracked and uncomfortable. Look for lip balms with ingredients like beeswax, shea butter, or coconut oil.

6. Don’t Forget Your Hands and Feet

Your hands and feet are often the first to show signs of dryness in the colder months. Apply a rich hand cream and foot cream regularly to keep them soft and moisturised. Consider wearing gloves and cozy socks to protect your extremities from the cold.

7. Stay Hydrated

Autumn’s cooler air can be deceptively drying, both for your skin and your body. Make sure to maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables to provide your skin with the necessary vitamins and antioxidants. Omega-3 fatty acids found in foods like salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds can also help keep your skin supple.

8. Humidify Your Indoor Space

Indoor heating systems can further dehydrate your skin. Use a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air and prevent excessive drying of your skin.

As we bid farewell to summer and welcome autumn, adapting your skincare routine is essential to maintain a healthy and radiant complexion. By following these autumn skincare tips and making slight adjustments to your skincare regime, you can ensure that your skin remains nourished, hydrated, and glowing throughout the fall season. Embrace the change in the air and let your skin reflect the beauty of the autumn season!
