Summer is the season of sunshine, beach trips, and outdoor adventures. However, the combination of heat, sun exposure, and outdoor activities can take a toll on your skin. At Southface Skin Clinic we believe that HydraFacial is the ultimate pre-holiday prep treatment for summer. Here’s why this innovative facial treatment should be your go-to solution for radiant, healthy skin as you get ready for your summer escapades.

3. Intense Hydration

Hydration is crucial for maintaining healthy skin, especially in the summer heat. HydraFacial infuses your skin with intense moisturizers and hydrating serums, leaving it plump and soft.

4. Customised Treatment

Whether you’re dealing with sun damage, oily skin, or uneven skin tone, HydraFacial can be customized to target your specific concerns. Our dermatologists will tailor the treatment to your skin’s unique needs.

June 13, 2024 by Helen Robertshaw

Welcome to a New Era of Acne Treatment

Here at Southface Skin Clinic, we are thrilled to announce the launch of the AviClear machine, a cutting-edge technology designed to transform the way we treat acne. We understand the profound impact acne can have on your confidence and overall wellbeing, and our mission is to provide the most effective and innovative solutions to help you achieve clearer, healthier skin.

What is AviClear?

AviClear is a state-of-the-art laser treatment that targets and treats acne at its source. Unlike traditional methods that can be harsh on the skin or require ongoing maintenance, AviClear offers a more effective, non-invasive solution with long-lasting results. This breakthrough technology is safe for all skin types and has been clinically proven to reduce acne by targeting the sebaceous glands, which are responsible for oil production and acne development.

How AviClear Works

AviClear works by using a specific wavelength of light that penetrates the skin and targets the sebaceous glands. The laser energy reduces the activity of these glands, leading to a decrease in oil production and, consequently, fewer acne breakouts. The treatment is quick, usually lasting around 30 minutes, and involves minimal discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as a slight warming of the skin, making it a comfortable and convenient option for those with busy lifestyles.

Benefits of AviClear

1. Effective and Long-Lasting Results

AviClear’s precision technology ensures targeted treatment, leading to significant improvements in skin clarity. Most patients notice a substantial reduction in acne after just a few sessions, with results continuing to improve over time.

2. Safe for All Skin Types

Whether you have fair, medium, or dark skin, AviClear is designed to be effective and safe. This inclusivity ensures that more individuals can benefit from this advanced treatment.

3. Non-Invasive and Quick

With no needles or surgical procedures involved, AviClear offers a non-invasive solution to acne. Each session is short, allowing you to fit it into your schedule with ease.

4. Minimal Downtime

One of the significant advantages of AviClear is the minimal downtime associated with the treatment. You can return to your daily activities immediately after the session, making it an ideal choice for those with active lifestyles.

What to Expect During Your AviClear Treatment

Your journey to clearer skin with AviClear begins with a consultation at Southface Skin Clinic. Our experienced medical professionals will assess your skin condition and develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. During the session, a cooling gel will be applied to your skin to enhance comfort, and protective eyewear will be provided. The laser handpiece will then be moved across the treatment area, delivering precise energy to target the sebaceous glands.

Our team will guide you through the process, ensuring you are informed and comfortable every step of the way.

Springtime Reminder: Why Mole Checks Are Essential for Your Skin Health

April 8, 2024 by Helen Robertshaw

As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, spring is a time of renewal and rejuvenation. While you may be eager to shed your winter layers and soak up the sunshine, it’s crucial not to overlook the importance of regular mole checks for your skin health.

1. Protecting Against Sun Damage

With the arrival of spring, many of us spend more time outdoors enjoying the warmer weather and sunshine. However, increased sun exposure also means a higher risk of skin damage and potential harm to our skin cells. Regular mole checks allow dermatologists to monitor any changes in your moles and detect signs of sun damage or skin cancer early on.

2. Detecting Changes in Moles

Spring is the perfect time to assess any changes in your moles, as they may have been hidden under layers of clothing during the colder months. By scheduling a mole check with your dermatologist, you can ensure that any new moles or alterations in existing ones are promptly evaluated and monitored. Early detection is key to successful treatment and better outcomes.

3. Monitoring Seasonal Skin Changes

As the seasons change, so does our skin. Springtime can bring about changes in skin texture, hydration levels, and overall appearance. During a mole check, dermatologists not only assess your moles for signs of skin cancer but also evaluate your skin’s health and provide recommendations for seasonal skincare routines tailored to your specific needs.

4. Preventive Care and Peace of Mind

Mole checks offer more than just early detection of skin cancer; they provide peace of mind knowing that your skin health is being actively monitored by experts. By staying proactive about your skin health, you can take control of your well-being and reduce the risk of potential skin-related issues in the future.

5. Empowering Patients with Knowledge

Educating patients about the importance of mole checks empowers them to take an active role in their skin health. By understanding the signs of skin cancer and the importance of regular screenings, individuals can make informed decisions about sun protection, skincare, and lifestyle habits that contribute to overall skin wellness.

While the arrival of spring brings about a sense of renewal and vitality, it’s crucial not to overlook the importance of regular mole checks for your skin health. By scheduling a mole check with us here at Southface Skin Clinic, you can protect against sun damage, detect changes in moles early on, and ensure your skin remains healthy and vibrant throughout the season and beyond. Take the first step towards a lifetime of healthy skin by prioritising mole checks this spring!

Photodynamic Therapy at Southface Skin Clinic

November 27, 2023 by Helen Robertshaw

In the realm of cancer treatment, scientific advancements continually seek less invasive and more targeted approaches. One such promising innovation that is now available at Southface Skin Clinic is Photodynamic Therapy (PDT), a method gaining recognition for its efficacy in treating various skin cancers.

Photodynamic Therapy is a medical treatment that utilises light-sensitive compounds, known as photosensitizers, in combination with light to selectively destroy abnormal cells. The photosensitizer is administered either topically or through injection, depending on the specific case and cancer type. Once absorbed by the targeted cells, the photosensitizer is activated by light of a specific wavelength, leading to a series of reactions that culminate in cell death.

The Process

1. Photosensitizer Administration: The patient receives a photosensitizing agent, which may be applied directly to the skin or administered systemically, depending on the extent and type of cancer.

2. Absorption: The photosensitizer is absorbed by both normal and cancerous cells but tends to accumulate more in the cancerous cells due to their increased vascularity and permeability.

3. Activation: After a specific incubation period, light is applied to the treatment area, activating the photosensitizer. This process generates reactive oxygen species, leading to cell damage and death.

4. Selective Destruction: The activated photosensitizer preferentially targets cancer cells, sparing surrounding healthy tissues to a significant extent.

The Results

Photodynamic Therapy has shown promising results in the treatment of various skin cancers, including:

1. Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common form of skin cancer, BCC responds well to PDT, particularly in cases where surgery is not a preferred option.

2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): PDT is effective in treating superficial SCCs, offering a non-invasive alternative to surgery for certain patients.

3. Actinic Keratosis (AK): PDT is used to treat precancerous skin lesions, preventing their progression to more advanced forms of skin cancer.

Benefits of Photodynamic Therapy:

1. Minimally Invasive: PDT is a minimally invasive procedure, reducing the need for extensive surgery and associated recovery times.

2. Cosmetic Outcome: Compared to surgery, PDT often results in better cosmetic outcomes, with reduced scarring and disfigurement.

3. Targeted Treatment: The ability to selectively target cancer cells minimizes damage to healthy tissues, leading to fewer side effects.

4. Outpatient Procedure: In many cases, PDT is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing patients to resume normal activities shortly after treatment.

Photodynamic Therapy represents a promising frontier in skin cancer treatment, offering a less invasive and targeted alternative to traditional methods. As research continues to refine and expand the applications of PDT, it holds the potential to become a cornerstone in the fight against skin cancer. While it may not be suitable for all cases, its integration into the broader spectrum of cancer therapies underscores the ongoing commitment to advancing patient care and outcomes.

Freezing Away Imperfections: Using Cryotherapy to Remove Skin Tags

November 20, 2023 by Helen Robertshaw

Skin tags are common skin growths that can be a nuisance, especially when they appear in highly visible areas or become irritated. If you’ve been dealing with skin tags and are looking for a non-invasive and effective method to remove them, cryotherapy may be the solution you’ve been seeking. In this blog, we’ll explore how cryotherapy can be used to eliminate those bothersome skin tags.

What Are Skin Tags?

Skin tags, scientifically known as acrochordons, are small, soft, benign growths that usually appear on the neck, armpits, groin, or areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing. They are typically flesh-colored and may vary in size and shape.

Cryotherapy is a medical procedure that uses extreme cold to remove or destroy abnormal or unwanted tissue, including skin tags. In this context, it’s often referred to as cryosurgery. Here’s how it works…

How it works

1. Freezing Agent: Cryotherapy for skin tag removal involves using a freezing agent, most commonly liquid nitrogen. Liquid nitrogen is extremely cold and, when applied to the skin tag, causes the cells to freeze and ultimately die.

2. Application: Our dermatologists, will use a specialized device to apply the liquid nitrogen directly to the skin tag. The cold temperature quickly freezes the tissue, which may result in a stinging or burning sensation during the procedure.

3. Cell Destruction: The freezing causes the cells within the skin tag to break down and die. Over time, the dead tissue will naturally slough off.

4. Healing Process: As the treated area heals, the skin tag will shrink and eventually fall off. The process typically takes a few weeks.

Advantages of Cryotherapy for Skin Tag Removal

Using cryotherapy to remove skin tags offers several advantages:

1. Non-Invasive: Cryotherapy is a non-invasive procedure, meaning it doesn’t require incisions or stitches, making it less painful and risky compared to other methods.

2. Quick Procedure: The actual cryotherapy treatment for skin tags is usually swift and can be performed during a single office visit.

3. Minimal Scarring: Cryotherapy typically results in minimal scarring, especially when compared to surgical removal methods.

4. Effective: Cryotherapy is an effective method for removing skin tags, and it is generally safe when performed by a trained healthcare provider.

Cautions and Considerations

While cryotherapy is a relatively safe and effective procedure for skin tag removal, there are a few cautions and considerations to keep in mind:

1. Pain and Discomfort: The freezing process can be uncomfortable, with some experiencing stinging or burning sensations during the procedure.

2. Scarring: Although minimal, there may still be some scarring or discoloration at the treatment site.

3. Who performs the treatment: It is extremely important you have a medical professional such as a dermatologist carry out this treatment due to the worry of the skin tag being cancerous. A lot of beauticians can now perform cryotherapy and we have had a few patients come to us where the skin tag has been removed but it was actually cancerous! Our dermatologists will check the skin tag is not cancerous before removal.

Cryotherapy is a cool and convenient method for removing skin tags, offering an effective way to get rid of these common skin growths without the need for invasive surgery. If you have skin tags that are bothering you, consulting a dermatologist or healthcare professional about cryotherapy could be the step toward smoother, tag-free skin that you’ve been looking for. Just remember to discuss your options and potential risks with a medical expert before proceeding with the treatment.
