Is That Spot Normal? 8 Skin Changes You Should Never Ignore

Most moles, freckles and skin marks are completely harmless. However, some skin changes can be early signs of skin cancer or other medical conditions.

Early diagnosis can make a significant difference, so it’s important to know what to look for.

1. A mole that changes shape, size or colour

One of the most important warning signs is a mole that begins to change.

Look for:

  • Asymmetry
  • Uneven borders
  • Multiple colours
  • Increasing size
  • Evolution over time

2. A sore that won’t heal

A patch or ulcer that persists for more than four weeks should always be assessed by a healthcare professional.

3. A mole that bleeds or crusts

Bleeding without injury is never considered normal and should be investigated.

4. A rapidly growing lump

Fast-growing pink or red bumps can sometimes represent certain forms of skin cancer.

5. Rough, scaly patches

Persistent rough areas, particularly on sun-exposed skin, may represent precancerous changes known as actinic keratoses.

6. A new dark patch under a nail

Although uncommon, melanoma can occasionally develop beneath the nail and should never be ignored.

7. Persistent itching or tenderness

If a mole suddenly becomes itchy, painful or tender, it should be examined.

8. Any lesion you’re worried about

You know your skin better than anyone else. If something doesn’t look or feel right, trust your instincts and seek professional advice.
