The Truth About Sunscreen: 7 Myths Dermatologists Hear Every Summer

Despite increasing awareness of skin cancer and sun damage, there are still many misconceptions surrounding sunscreen.

At Southface Dermatology, we regularly hear the same myths from patients. Here are seven of the most common—and the truth behind them.

Myth 1: “I don’t need sunscreen when it’s cloudy.”

False.

Up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate clouds, meaning your skin can still be exposed even on overcast days.

Myth 2: “I only need sunscreen on holiday.”

False.

UV exposure occurs every day, even during everyday activities such as walking the dog, driving or sitting near a window.

Daily SPF should be part of your skincare routine throughout the year.

Myth 3: “My make-up contains SPF, so that’s enough.”

Usually not.

Most people don’t apply enough foundation or moisturiser to achieve the SPF stated on the packaging. Dedicated sunscreen should always be applied underneath.

Myth 4: “If I have darker skin, I can’t get skin cancer.”

False.

Although darker skin offers some natural protection, skin cancer can affect all skin tones. Everyone should wear sunscreen and check their skin regularly.

Myth 5: “Once a day is enough.”

Unfortunately not.

Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours when outdoors and immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Myth 6: “A high SPF means I can stay in the sun all day.”

No sunscreen offers complete protection.

SPF should always be combined with shade, protective clothing and avoiding strong midday sun.

Myth 7: “A tan is healthy.”

A tan is actually a sign that your skin has been damaged by UV radiation.

Repeated sun exposure increases your risk of premature ageing, pigmentation and skin cancer.
