Botox® is used to soften the action and reduce the tone of the muscles of facial expression which cause wrinkles. The most commonly treated areas are frown lines between the eyebrows, crows feet around the eyes and also the lines that form across the forehead. It is a safe treatment that has been used by millions of people. It is not suitable for everyone however and your Dermatologist will discuss your suitability.
How does Botulinum Toxin® work?
Botulinum Toxin® temporarily weakens the muscle and is used to treat facial lines caused primarily by the action of the muscles on the skin. Therefore, the areas which are mainly treated include, the deep creases between the eyebrows, crows feet wrinkles and forehead lines.
The treatment has shown to be very successful with just a single injection. Depending on the skin type, the results can last from 3-5 months. Some patients do have very powerful muscles and therefore may require more than a single treatment to relax the muscle in this particular area. A top-up treatment should help weaken this muscle further. The full effect of the treatment can be seen within 14 days. Patients that have regular treatments with Botulinum Toxin® find that the effects may last longer with subsequent treatments.
In addition to lines and wrinkles, Botulinum Toxin® can also be used to treat Hyperhidrosis – commonly known as excessive sweating, especially in the armpits and the hands.
What does the treatment involve?
After a medical questionnaire and your formal consent , the treatment itself is quick and takes around ten minutes. Any discomfort is short-lived.The clinician will ask you to frown and then relax the muscles to establish where to inject. The treatment consists of a series of injections that last 2 or 3 seconds. As with any injection, there is a small risk of bruising or swelling at the site injected.
Is it safe?
Botulinum toxin as a muscle relaxant has an excellent safety record and a long history of use in medicine. It has been used in the cosmetic industry for 15 years to treat facial wrinkles. As with any medicine, there is a possibility of an allergic reaction but this is extremely rare.
Treatment by an experienced clinician, as in our clinic, greatly reduces the risk of any possibility of drooping of the eyebrow or eyelids, which is more likely to happen in inexperienced hands.
